Get Off the Hamster Wheel

Do you feel like you’re living your own Groundhog Day? Doing the same thing, day after day, month after month, year after year. I have. The same morning routine. The same commute. The same job, with the same meetings. The same kids’ sports. The same vacations.

Our routines can help us be efficient and productive, but they can also make us feel like we’re on a hamster wheel. We want to get off, but we don’t see how we can. We have stuff to do (someone has to keep the wheel spinning!); we don’t have enough time to get off (we’re too busy!); and (whether we admit it or not), we’re actually comfortable on that wheel.

While being comfortable is nice, it can also leave us feeling bored, stuck and uninspired. As much as we may resist change, we need it. Change provides opportunities for learning, excitement, amazing experiences, and the building of character, resilience & strength. Comfort doesn’t do any of that.

When you look back over your life do you want to think of the same year lived over and over?

Or, are you willing to step out of your comfort zone to live a life you look back on as full of variety, adventure, progress, and fulfillment?

Step off the hamster wheel. Switch up your routine. Study something new. Take an unusual trip. Hang out with different people. Take a risk. You’ll create interesting & meaningful memories that will have you looking back on your life with pride and joy.
