To Change, Focus on the Gains

April 29, 2019

Most of us find change difficult. We like routines. We like what we know—even if it isn’t the best thing for us. We continue to eat unhealthy foods, smoke, drink excessively, remain in unhappy relationships, stay in jobs we don’t like. We’re not living as well as we could be, but we’re comfortable.

We worry about all that we’ll have to give up: the ice cream, cigarettes, wine, extra hour of sleep, house, co-workers, perks. And it scares us. We want to be different, but we don’t want to give up what we know and what we like.

The future is unknown. It’s scary. Are you thinking that the devil we know is better than the devil we don’t? That you can live with things the way they are, even if you’re not as happy as you’d like to be?

Imagine that you have to give up something you’re comfortable with—maybe something you even enjoy—but what you gain is so much better. Maybe you can’t imagine it. Maybe you’re worried that it won’t be better. You’re focused on what you have to lose.

But what if, instead of focusing on what you’re giving up, you focus on making sure what you gain is better? What if you put all of your attention and energy into that? What would happen? Would you lose 20 lbs? Would you get the job of your dreams? Would you meet the love of your life?

You’re in charge of your life. Will you stay stuck where you are, looking back and holding onto what you’ve been doing? Or, will you look ahead, see the possibilities that await you, and take action to make them your new reality? It’s up to you :)
